LEE UFAN | VERSAILLES

.

Each year, a different artist is invited to incorporate their works into the historic Chateau of Versailles, in the quiet city in France. Visitors and locals alike, have seen artists Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami do so in the past, bringing the crowds with their successful (if not sometimes controversial) residencies.

2014 sees Korean artist Lee Ufan invited to create site-specific artworks, primarily in the garden and outdoor areas (unlike the previously exhibiting artists that placed their artworks inside the Chateau rooms).

Korean artist Lee Ufan’s works integrate into the outdoor locations superbly, where visitors experience and witness perfect harmony between art and nature. The contrast of materials and context (steel and flora, along with conceptual artworks in various locations in the Palace gardens, primarily) prove effective also due to the Summer span of the exhibition.

Materials such as stone and steel, the signature materials of Ufan’s work, sit naturally alongside their surrounding environment as if they had always coexisted. Visitors to the Chateau of Versailles are welcomed with a map, but encouraged to wander through the gardens to discover for themselves, the 10 different works by Ufan.

The experience of the location is part of the experience of the works. Site-specific locations such as Earth of the Bridge, confront the viewer and force them to cross the steel artwork, past it’s two surrounding stones, to break the invisible boundary between work and viewer.

This interaction is a welcome reminder to our approach towards art. Individually, it is up to the viewer to interpret the works, and allow curiosity to introduce a new way of viewing, and interacting with, art.

The gardens themselves are beautiful, and often not as celebrated as the Chateau. Wide, open spaces and feelings of grandeur overwhelm the visitor on the two hour walk around the gardens. Classic sculptures assist with visuals, but it is the sculpted flora which frame the sky and pathways toward each artwork that complete the experience.

Lee Ufan’s site-specific works in this particular environment and space are unmissable.
