Most will be familiar with conceptual label Slow and Steady Wins the Race, headed by American fashion designer Mary Ping. Based in New York, Mary founded the label in 2001 and has since seen her designs celebrated worldwide.

In her words, Slow and Steady Wins The Race “…is seasonless and proves that good design elicits both an intellectual and emotional response that is ageless, cross-cultural — boundless”. Colette, Dover Street Market, 10 Corso Como and Beams have all been fans of her rule-breaking brand. Mary combines timeless clothing items and accessories with practical design, and then adds a twist. A classic sweater with optional removal arms? Yes please.

Only 7 years ago Mary and her work were part of the highly coveted V&A’s New York Fashion Now exhibition, part of the Avant Garde section. Now, at the age of 36, designer Mary Ping is just warming up.

What does ‘To Rebel’ or ‘Rebellion’ mean to you?
• This is a hard word for me. I prefer ripple effects, because they last longer in the end.

What is ‘forward-thinking’ to you?
• Forward thinking is almost being psychic. It’s a personal, physiological, emotional barometer. To be forward thinking, not only do you have to have a point of view but it should hit the mark and stick.

How important is global family / a global connection?

• This is exactly how the way the world works now. We have tools to make distance disappear, but that said nothing has replaced very intangible human connections.
