NOW Gallery x Phoebe English: Floating | Falling | Drowning | Flying
NOW GALLERY, GREENWICH PENINSULA
21 MAY – 9th AUGUST 2015
FLOATING | FALLING | DROWNING | FLYING
AN INTROSPECTION OF PROCESS
British designer Phoebe English’s design ethos is compiled of meticulous methods of craftsmanship, and the womenswear designer has now applied it to a gallery context.
70 kg of silver glass beads are used to construct the central installation piece which is a stunning beaded form effortlessly falling from the gallery’s ceiling. Spiked glass beads are poetically soft as they fall and create structure. Each piece has been intricately hand stitched together to form one glistening surface, which stretches to the top of the 7m tall space.
A vision of poetic craftsmanship, the piece breathtakingly flows from the ceiling. Elements of contrasting textures are celebrated as sculpture in a gallery context, just as English’s sculptural garments are within boutiques.
An archive of unseen photographs, sketchbooks, textile swatches, tools and research images can be viewed at the exhibition. An invaluable insight into the tools behind the creation of each season’s collections. Process is transparent, through the various table displays running alongside her main installation.
Phoebe English mentions: “To be able to bring together all the different threads of my working practice into one space has been a unique opportunity to explore each piece in myopic detail and reconsider them on an individual basis. The Now Gallery is a stunning setting to display these pieces and within their cavernous galleries this exhibition of process: ‘Floating, Falling, Drowning, Flying:’ will show alongside our largest installation to date.”
