TALIB KWELI AT BLUE NOTE AOYAMA
Tuesday 26 July, 2016
Hip hop artist Talib Kweli took to the Blue Note stage in Tokyo’s Aoyama venue, to an eager audience of both old school and new school hip hop heads, awaiting the Brooklyn-born artist.
Tokyo’s legendary DJ MURO opened with a classic set for guests including Common’s The Light, Mos Def’s History, amongst others.
History, Gem’ Em High, Just To Get By, and Never Been In Love Before, including Blackstar classics, brought a nostalgia paired with contemporary enthusiasm for one of New York’s greatest hip hop artists. All performed with pure energy, even turning recognised favourites (perhaps from forgotten lyrics…) into new and currently relevant freestyles.
Talib Kweli was accompanied by his live band members: John Cage (guitar), Brady Watt (bass), Chris Rob (keys) and Camau”Klutch” Bernstine on drums, who’s wild and agile drumming kept us mesmerised. After the show, “Klutch” mentioned he had an upcoming album in the works, and from the electricity he produced on stage, we couldn’t anticipate the album more.
